Did you know that, for the first time ever, we have five generations in the workplace at the same time? What’s more, in the USA almost 40% of people now work for a boss who is younger than them, and there’s no reason to think things are much different here in New Zealand.
This was something that became very real for entrepreneur Chip Conley, when he was hired several years ago by what was, at that stage, a young start up – the company we now know as AirbnB. Although originally hired for his experience in the hospitality industry, Chip soon discovered that his value to the company (the majority of who were under 30) lay in his acquired relationship wisdom, process knowledge, and life skills.
In this great TED Talk, Chip talks about how age diversity makes companies stronger and calls for different generations to mentor each other at work, with wisdom flowing from old to young and young to old alike.
