It’s a reasonable question. For many New Zealanders, KiwiSaver will become one of their largest financial assets, so naturally they want to know they’re with the right provider.
The reality is that there isn’t a single “best” provider for everyone.
While some KiwiSaver schemes feature more favourable elements than others, KiwiSaver is not like buying a car or a phone where one option can objectively be better than another. The right provider depends on your goals, timeframe, attitude towards risk, retirement objectives, and the way your investments are managed.
Yet many investors spend a significant amount of time comparing providers without first considering what may be the more important question: am I invested in a way that is appropriate for my circumstances?
This is where the KiwiSaver industry can make things difficult. The providers most people know are often those with the largest advertising budgets. Marketing material is naturally designed to highlight strengths, whether that’s customer service awards, digital features, brand recognition, or a period of returns that paints the provider in the best light relative to peers.
While these factors can help build confidence in a provider, they often receive more attention than the questions that truly drive long-term outcomes.
- Am I in the right fund?
- Am I taking an appropriate level of risk?
- Does my KiwiSaver align with my broader financial goals?
- And will it continue to remain appropriate as my circumstances change?
These questions can’t be answered by an advertisement. They require an understanding of your individual situation, objectives, and financial circumstances.
A provider may have an excellent investment offering, but if an investor is sitting in the wrong fund for their goals, they may still achieve a poor outcome. Even if two KiwiSaver providers are broadly comparable, a portfolio and fund selection appropriate to your goals will often have a much bigger impact on your long-term outcome than the provider you ultimately choose.
This is where quality advice can make a meaningful difference. A trusted adviser helps ensure your KiwiSaver is structured for your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. They can provide guidance on fund selection, contribution levels, retirement planning, and help investors avoid making emotional decisions during periods of market volatility.
Advice also shouldn’t be viewed as a one-off decision. Circumstances change throughout life. Income levels rise, careers evolve, families grow, retirement approaches, and financial priorities shift. A strategy that was appropriate at age 30 may not be appropriate at age 45 or 60. Regular reviews help ensure your KiwiSaver remains aligned with your objectives and continues to support the lifestyle you’re working towards.
The underlying investment philosophy of a provider deserves careful consideration. Investment outcomes can vary significantly between managers and investment approaches. Some providers rely heavily on active management, where investment managers attempt to outperform markets through security selection and market timing. While this can sound appealing, history shows that consistently outperforming markets after fees is extremely difficult, and many active managers have not achieved it over long periods.
Others adopt a low-cost, diversified, passive investment approach. Rather than attempting to predict market movements, these strategies focus on broad diversification, disciplined portfolio construction, and capturing the returns delivered by global markets. This approach has historically provided investors with a reliable and cost-effective way to build wealth over the long term. Whether a passive, active, or blended approach is appropriate will depend on an investor’s objectives, preferences, and circumstances.
Fees remain important, but they should be viewed in context. The objective is not simply to find the lowest-cost provider. Rather, investors should consider the overall value being received, including the investment approach, portfolio construction, service, support, adviser involvement where applicable, and the likelihood of remaining invested in an appropriate strategy over the long term.
For many investors, the greatest determinant of long-term success will not be whether one provider outperforms another in a given year. It will be whether they remain invested in an appropriate fund, maintain a disciplined strategy through market cycles, and continue making decisions aligned with their long-term objectives.
So, who is the best KiwiSaver provider?
In many cases, the better question is: who is helping ensure my KiwiSaver is invested appropriately for my situation?
Strong KiwiSaver outcomes rarely come from choosing the provider with the biggest brand, the slickest marketing, or the strongest recent returns. More often, they come from combining a sound investment philosophy with quality advice that helps investors make informed decisions and stay focused on what they can control.
Successful KiwiSaver investing is ultimately about more than choosing a provider. It’s about having the right strategy, investing in the right fund, staying disciplined through market cycles, and ensuring your KiwiSaver evolves alongside your life and financial goals.
