Questions to ask yourself over the holiday season

As you take some time to reflect during the holiday season, you might find the questions posed in this article, written by Cambridge Partners’ Andrew Nutttall, helpful.

There are many ways to get your financials in order, but it all really starts with;

– What is important to you and your family?

– What are your priorities?

– What are your values?

Jonathan Clements, a former personal finance columnist for the Wall Street Journal provides us with the following questions to help us squeeze maximum happiness from our spending and pursuing the goals that matter.

1.If money were no object, what would you change about your life?

2.What are your top financial worries?

3.What’s the minimum amount of money you need each month to keep your financial life afloat?

4.What did you learn about money from your parents and which of these beliefs have you adopted as your own?

5.Think of three people you know who are in great financial shape.  What have been the keys to their financial success?

6.Is it important for you to drive a nice car and, if so, why?

7.Think about your weaknesses.  Are they acceptable human failings or are they inflicting major damage, including major financial damage?

8.What’s on your wish list for major expenditures in the years ahead? Why do you want them?

9.What is your net worth; the value of everything you own, minus all debt?

10.Imagine your perfect retirement date.  How would you spend it?  What would you be happy doing and would you be happy doing these things every day for the rest of your life?

11.Are there children, either your own or someone else’s, you would like to help financially, and what sort of assistance would you like to provide?

12.If you died tomorrow would you bequeath a mess?

13.When was the last time you talked honestly about your finances with somebody?

Some of these questions might not apply to you but take some time to answer a few.  Not only will they give you clarity, they will help you shape a path forward to financial freedom, whatever that means to you.

Best wishes to you and your family for 2020.  I trust it will be your best year ever!
